It's no secret that our economy is in very serious trouble. Everyday we hear about companies laying off thousands of workers, and the unemployment rolls are increasing each week.

The job losses are occurring in all American industries: real estate, construction, finance, law, newspapers, magazines, hotels - no sector has been immune to the financial downturn.

These obviously aren't ordinary times. What worked before when looking for a job probably won't work today. So what can you do if you find yourself out of work now?

Consider Relocating

Unemployment is a painful experience. At times it can feel as though no one wants you. You can feel that you will never get a job. You can feel like you're going to be stuck in your present unemployed state forever.

I know the feeling of unemployment. I have been unemployed before, and I wrote about one of my experiences in the book How to Build Wealth and at more length in the book Gainful Employment. Unemployment can be painful, but one of the most overlooked truths about unemployment is that unemployment can be an incredibly profitable opportunity.

1. Take advantage of this career transition, and take the time to get to know who you are and what you want.

2. Do a personal and skill assessment. Understand the skills you bring to the marketplace. What are the job options that would match your skill sets. If you are unable to do this yourself, seek professional help; this is no time to go it alone.

3. Develop a strong mission statement of what you want, where you want to go, and what you want to contribute to the company. . It helps you talk about yourself in a more professional manner.
